Design vs Winter Blues (Spoiler Alert: Design Wins)

While February may be the shortest month of the year, the cold weather and lack of sunlight can make it feel never-ending. If your home is feeling as dreary as the weather, it’s time to refresh your space and bring it back to life! While a complete home makeover may not be feasible, small changes to your decor can have a huge impact.

Embrace Warmth and Light

While we may not yet be into warm spring or summer days, it’s not too early to start infusing your space with warm colors.

Instead of cool colors, bring in hues like reds, oranges, and yellows through accent walls, throw pillows, artwork, or even fresh flowers. These colors evoke feelings of warmth and comfort, instantly brightening your space.

Maximize the amount of natural light in your rooms by keeping windows clean and unobstructed. Consider replacing heavy curtains with sheer ones or blinds that allow light to filter through while maintaining privacy. Of course, if privacy isn’t a concern, we’d gladly say ditch the window coverings altogether and let that beautiful light in!

Think about the lighting in your rooms and add in additional lamps or overhead fixtures to create a warm and inviting atmosphere. Combine ambient lighting (overhead fixtures), task lighting (desk lamps), and accent lighting (wall sconces) to layer your light beautifully.

Bring Nature Indoors

Yes, we’re saying it again: add greenery to your home with houseplants. Not only do they purify the air, but they also bring a touch of nature indoors and add a sense of life to a room.

Layer these with natural materials such as wood, stone, and wicker into your decor for added warmth and visual interest.

Declutter and Organize

A cluttered space can feel overwhelming and contribute to feelings of stress and depression. However, a fresh, neatly organized space has a way of elevating your mood and putting you into a totally different headspace.

What chaos around you could be pulling and tugging at your joy?

Could you take an hour or two out of your evening/weekend to ditch the thorn and create a space where you can breathe?

Take some time to declutter your home and get rid of anything you don’t need or use. Implement smart storage solutions to keep your belongings organized and out of sight. This will help your space feel more open and inviting.

Some are more sensitive to smells than others but even the virtually nose-def can stand to benefit from mood-boost that comes with bright, fresh home fragrances.

You may opt for more luxurious fragrances that take you to the remarkable hotel in NYC. A well-placed candle or diffuser can practically transport you in the moment to memories you happily recall.

Alternatively, you may find love in your favorite blend of essential oils diffusing throughout the house. Fragrances like lemon, orange, or bergamot can be incredibly elevating. Mix and match your favorites and be sure to place your diffusers in key places around your home to ensure you smile as you transition from one room to the next.
