Natural Ways to Decorate for the Holidays

It’s the most wonderful time of the year!  But before you start running to the store to buy decorations, why not take a look around outside instead?  Using natural materials for your holiday decor not only helps you save some money, it also increases your storage space and eliminates waste as well!  Reduce, reuse and recycle can be applied to so many aspects of life, so why not apply it to holiday decorations as well!

Incorporate Pinecones

Pinecones are essentially a winter/ cold weather staple. Whether big or small, there are plenty of ways to incorporate them into your holiday decor. Combine them with some garland and make a piece for your mantle or collect small ones and place them into a plastic ball ornament for your tree. Try spray painting them white to really get that winter feel!

Branch Out

Whether they’ve fallen to the ground or you cut a branch from a tree, simply placing twigs or branches in a vase can give the room a perfect winter feel.  Bonus points if they have color!  Twigs with evergreen or winterberry branches will give a simple decoration the perfect amount of holiday spirit.

Create a Wood-filled Fireplace

Have a fireplace that acts more as a statement piece for the room rather than a way to heat it?  Try filling it with stacked logs of wood – it’ll give the room that perfect forestry, wood cabin feel!

Add Some Scent

Try tying bay leaves, thyme, rosemary and marjoram together with twine. These bouquets can be a nice centerpiece for your table and even better, you can cook with them when they’ve dried out!

Find Some Fruit

Trust us …  green apples, red apples and cranberries will soon become your favorite natural holiday decor pieces.

There are plenty of ways you can incorporate fruit into your decorations, but to name a few:

  • Freeze cranberries with water surrounding them. When frozen, break apart into pieces and add them to the ice bucket for your holiday party.
  • Place a smaller red candle in a bigger vase and fill the excess space with cranberries.
  • Fill a vase with apples (red, green or red AND green) and place a few pieces of evergreen throughout.

Grab Some Garland

What’s the holiday season without some garland?  Not only is it festive, but it smells of fresh pine!  Hang it on your mantle or wrap it around your banister and you’ll have the perfect holiday feel.  If you’re looking for a pop of color, add some cranberries and popcorn to make it even more festive!

Try Combining Ideas

Ever heard of an apple garland?  It’s simple to make, and there are plenty of ways to utilize it!  Take a few apples and pinecones with your evergreen garland and decorate your mantle.  If you’re looking to really impress, wrap it around your doorway.  You’ll just need to puncture a hole through the center of the apples, and string wire or twine through the apple, so that you can tie it to the garland.  It’s a simple process, and will make your holiday decorations stand out like no other.
