The structure was 1200 square... read moreI purchased a house in Lancaster City in July of last year. As a first time home buyer, I was excited and somewhat nervous at the prospect of turning an outdated and slightly run-down house into a place I could call my own. The structure was 1200 square feet of living space built in 1954 and consisted of a 7 ft. by 11 ft. kitchen with a drop ceiling that had not been updated since the 80's, 3 bedrooms and one bath. Hardwood floors on the second floor had been partially sanded, with a poor attempt made to add a pop of color to the trim in the form of mustard yellow paint. It was not easy on the eyes at that point, but, to quote Amie, "the bones of the house were solid". I planned on a few minor adjustments and maybe a fresh coat of white paint to clean the place up a bit. It was my first home, so what did I really expect?As Amie walked through the house, she was methodical. At first I thought we were focusing on the kitchen, but she had much more in mind. She looked over the house, top to bottom, dictating as she went, sifting through ideas out loud until she found the one that clicked. Room by room she planned with some minor adjustments and some more involved. As I looked, I saw paint peeling off the walls and worn out wooden planks for floor boards. Amie, on the other hand, saw a home with a contemporary look and a floor plan that would make the most out of every inch of space.When the work began, it was overwhelming at first, but Amie kept encouraging me that the end result would be well worth it. After several months of planning and implementing, one step at a time, it started to come together. She advised me to use a darker stain for the oak floors upstairs, which modernized the look but left all the warmth of an older home. Light grey walls with white trim that really did pop added to the contemporary alterations. The stair cased which had been an eyesore almost turned into an accent piece with an espresso paint for the risers, seamlessly marrying the LVT on the first floor with the stained hardwood upstairs.The kitchen, once completely gutted, started to come together better than I could have hoped. The once stuffy room had become an 11 ft. by 19 ft. open eating area. The drop ceiling had been torn down and recessed LED lights were installed to brighten up the space. A wall that divided the kitchen and dining area had been exchanged for an island with white cabinets and an elegant black granite countertop that became the focal point of the room. It allowed more than enough space for food prep as well as providing an eating area with two bar stools. Adequate room was provided for a traditional dining room table to comfortably seat eight people. The cabinets were a shade of grey with white-flecked granite counter tops that perfectly complemented the walls. To finish it off was an under mount 10 in. stainless steel sink which allowed for practicality in a somewhat limited space - white subway tile was the ideal backsplash.Amie took my outdated house and somehow she created a home that was simultaneously functional, modern, and warm, a place where I can entertain friends and family and can proudly show off the little details that went into each room. I am able to cook in a kitchen that just months before seemed claustrophobic but now is spacious and open, allowing me to interact with my guests while preparing a meal. I could not be more pleased with the results, and I have Amie and her team at Grand Masterpiece Design to thank!! read less
